If you are used to working with a float valve, you probably know how to usually adjust the water level in the tank to be too high or too low. To lower the water level if it is too high in the tank, you can tilt down the arm that connects the ball float to the ball valve assembly. Bend this arm up slightly to raise the water level.
With a modern filling valve, the water level is regulated differently. Normally, to raise or lower the water level, you squeeze the clamp on the rod attached to the fill valve and slide the float cup up or down.

The most significant difference from the float ball that can be seen inside the tank is found in pressure-assisted toilets. This flushing system does not use a float ball or a cup. In this case, the toilet tank has a smaller tank.

Float valves can be found in well systems, sump pumps, and toilet tanks. The concept of the float valve is simple. A floating ball or cup rests on the surface of the water in a pit or tank and activates a valve or switch when the water level reaches a predetermined limit.

Look inside the toilet tank, and you’ll see an air-filled ball connected to a stem or rod, which in turn is connected to a fill valve. When you flush the water, the float drops with the water level, the stem opens the fill valve, and water begins to flow into the tank. The float rises with the water to a certain point when the stem forces the valve to close, and the water stops. This is a classic example of a float valve.
A float switch works on the same principle, but instead of a valve, the stem of the float activates a switch that starts the pump. The purpose of the pump may be to fill the tank, as in some well systems, or to drain the pit, as in the case of a sump pump. Why is my Toilet Constantly Running?
If the toilet runs continuously, you may be wasting gallons of water and thus increasing your water bill—no need to worry because a typically leaking toilet can be easily fixed. The three most common causes are a damaged or dirty valve, a chain that is too long or too short between the flush lever and the valve, or a float that is not positioned correctly.
The first step is to turn off the water supply to the toilet. On the back of the wall behind the bathroom, find the silver button and turn it to the right. Second, remove the tank’s lid and begin to identify all the components and how they interact.

First, make sure the chain is correctly connecting the flush lever and the rubber latch. Sometimes the circuit disconnects. Then shake the flush lever and check for too little or too much slack in the chain. If it is longer, water will continue to flow into the bowl because the valve is open. If it is shorter, the chain will not open the shutter when the lever is pressed. If necessary, cut off the excess chain. A float may also be attached to the chain; adjust the float to be above the surface of the water.

Over time, the valve may not correctly close the drain valve because it has become dirty, deformed, or broken. If it needs to be cleaned or replaced, empty the tank entirely and disconnect it from the circuit. Various replacement options will be available in the store. If you can, match the brand or find a “universal” marking that looks similar to your existing one. After reattaching the valve, test it with water to make sure it seals properly.
If you find that the flush valve (the thing that holds the valve in place) could cause the water leak and need to be replaced, read these step-by-step instructions.
Cause 3 – the float is not in its position.
The water level in the tank is controlled by an adjustable float. If the float is set too low, it results in poor flushing. If it is set too high, water will enter the overflow pipe and flow continuously. Look for the fill level mark inside the rear of the tank and mark it on the overflow tube, so it is easy to see. If the effect is not visible, measure approximately 1 inch down the overflow pipe and make a mark.
Then turn on the water and flush the toilet to see where the water level stops compared to the mark. If the water overflows, the pump float is too high. Adjust the float up or down accordingly. If the toilet is older, it may be necessary to bend the brass rod connected to the float. Newer toilets only require turning the screw or moving the clamp along the rod. Sometimes the fill valve (to which the float is connected) will not close and may be faulty. In this case, a replacement valve must be purchased.
